The Westwood Warriors competed in the Leander ISD Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament during Winter Break on Friday December 28 and Saturday December 29. The tournament consisted of two pools, in which the winners of each pool would face off in the championship game. In their first match, the Warriors battled out a victory against Harker Heights Knights in the second half. Patrick Sladek commanded Westwood to victory, scoring a total of 17 points, 15 in the second half, defeating the Knights 59-53! Notable performances were also credited to Brandon Parks (9 points), Corey Levinson (8 points), and Christian Robinson (7 points).
Later that afternoon, the Warriors faced the Cedar Park Timberwolves for a third time this season. The Warriors took control of the game very early on and kept a formidable lead over their opponents for the entire game. Patrick Sladek once again took leadership on the court and scored 10 points, as the team defeated Cedar Park 51-34. Heston Williams (10 points) and Christian Robinson (8 points) also played great offensively.
On Saturday morning, Westwood played its third and final game of the tournament against the Bastrop Bears. Keeping up the momentum, the Warriors shut down the Bears in the first half and finished the game with a 57-47 victory! Heston Williams led the offensive charge in the first quarter hitting two threes and scoring a total of 11 points. Fellow Warriors Luke Durham (9 points), Brandon Parks (8 points), and Patrick Sladek (7 points) kept the offense in the lead. Winning all three games took the Warriors into the championship game later that evening.
The Warriors faced the Lake Highlands Wildcats in the Championship Game. Immediately, Patrick Sladek caught fire in the first half, scoring 17 points. His leadership in the second half led the Warriors to victory. The Wildcats gave up 30 points to the Warriors in the first half, but came out a new team after halftime, holding the Warriors to only 2 points in the third quarter. However, the Warriors answered back with 15 points in the 4th quarter, defeating the Wildcats 47-42. Luke Durham hit 4 three-pointers throughout the game, scoring 12 points. Brandon Parks (7 points) and Corey Levinson (6 points), scored most of their points in the second half. The Warriors also hit 8 out of 9 free-throws, winning the free throw battle and ultimately the championship!
As a result of the Holiday Classic, Patrick Sladek was selected the Most Valuable Player, scoring a total of 51 points. Teammates Brandon Parks and Corey Levinson were recognized as All Tourney Selections for their consistent outstanding performances.
The coaches are thrilled and proud of the Warriors efforts over the duration of the tournament. The athletes were resilient and played well as a team. They have played some of the best basketball all season at these four games and will continue to roll with this momentum into the new year, playing their final 12 district games of the 2018-2019 season.
