Being a student trainer at Westwood High School means being part of a great  training program, which could be one of the best in the state of Texas. While in this program you will be helping out with all athletics and be part of that program.  It would involve traveling to other schools, staying after school for practice or games and working some Saturdays and holidays throughout the school year when we have practices or games.

 Being a student trainer involves:

           - cleaning and disinfecting the training room

           - taping an athlete's ankle, wrist, knee, etc. for support

            - setting up practices/games - water, ice packs, equipment

            - assist the athlete with his/her rehab exercises

            - accompanying the teams to games or tournaments

            - caring for blisters

            - give wound care to the athletes

            - applying first aid to the injured athlete

            - bandaging

            - cleaning and dressing a wound

            - applying and fitting crutches

            - giving heat or ice treatments to injured athletes

            - applying ace wraps to strained muscles

           - helping give physical exams

            - hopefully receiving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification

            - help issue equipment to athletes

            - help repair equipment

            - help keep an inventory of equipment

            - working closely with coaches during practice

Traveling with the team could be 1-2 nights a week depending upon how many student trainers we have.  Students rotate through the sports so that everyone has a chance to work all sports, if they so desire. It requires you to stay after school until about 6:30 in the evening for practice and later for games, or be here before school if your team has morning practices. The SELECTED SPORTS include football, volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys baseball and girls softball.  It is possible for you to earn a Westwood athletic award or a letter jacket.  All varsity trainers attend the sports banquet with the athletes. When you travel with a team, if the school district is providing a meal for the players the trainers also get a meal. We have Westwood Sports Medicine T-shirts, game day shirts, jackets, windsweats, and shorts, for you to wear at practice, games, and tournaments.  It is possible for you to hold a part time job in addition to being a student trainer if your job does not conflict with practices or games.  You must keep good grades, just as the athletes.  NO PASS - NO PLAY applies to trainers as well. You must be dependable, trustworthy and honest.  Eventually, we expect you to be able to travel on your own with the teams and to care for them.  After three to four years in the program, you may become eligible for a college scholarship as a trainer.

If you are interested, you need to contact Doc Bauer (464-4053) or Doc Ohnheiser (464-4120) at Westwood High School or come by and see us at the high school training room.  If you are approved for the program and are a freshman boy or girl you would be in 1st and 5th block. Upperclassman boys will be in 2nd and 6th block, and upperclassman girl you will be in 4th and 8th block.
