Heartbreaker at Home -
Westwood Boys Come Up Short of Playoffs It was a game of "What If's". What if ...we had made one more basket.....had one less turnover....grabbed one more rebound....made two more free throws? But there were no "What If's" about how hard the Warrior Boy's Basketball Team competed on Senior Night in their attempt to take a District 16-5A playoff spot from the Round Rock Dragons (21-10). With a packed and rowdy house of loyal fans cheering them on, this group of Warriors brought competitive basketball back to Westwood High School. With neither team wanting their seasons' to end, they battled from buzzer to buzzer in a thriller, but the Warriors came up short on a 53-51 score. With news media and several college coaches watching, here is how the game was written about in the morning paper......... (excerpted from Austin American Statesman,

Warrior Boys Hoopsters Top Leander - Play
Tuesday For Playoff Spot The Westwood Boy's Basketball Team kept their hopes alive for the school's first playoff spot in over 6 years by beating the Leander Lions, 58-49, Friday night at Leander. The prospects were not looking good in the first half, as the Warriors could not find the good shots they were looking for and the ones they took were mostly off the mark. Michael Harris started things off well in the first quarter with a deep corner 3-pointer and Jake Pearcy hit a driving layup to give the Warriors an early 5-0 lead. But things went cold after that as the Lions zone defense slowed the Full Throttle Warriors down a couple of gears and the Warriors led by only 8-7 at the end of one. In the second quarter, a short jumper by Derek Nalodka and inside baskets by Hunter Cottle and Parker Hanusa seemed to be giving the Warriors some momentum, but defensive lapses in the last couple of minutes allowed the Lions to take a 27-22 lead into the locker room at the half. In the 3rd quarter, the Warriors came out with a renewed defensive intensity and would hold the Lions to only three made baskets for the quarter. J.T. Dettman found the range for a 3-pointer from the corner and a tip-in underneath, while Parker Hanusa continued to score in the paint. Jake Pearcy was doing major damage on defense, as he added to his team-leading steals totals, and hit a big 3-pointer to secure the lead late, as the Warriors led at the end of three quarters, 38-34. Matt Holeman added to the team's defensive intensity with a while taking 3 charges to turn back Lions scoring attempts. The 4th period continued the momentum, as J.T. Dettman and Matt Holeman each stroked 3-pointers early, to extend the Warrior lead, and the Pearcy /Nalodka backcourt duo dribbled out the last minutes of the game, as the team hit 10 free throws down the stretch to keep the Lions from making up any ground. Jake Pearcy and J.T Dettman led the Warriors in scoring with 14 points apiece, while Derek Nalodka added 10. With the victory, the Warrior improved their season record to 17-13 and secured a winning season for Head Coach Brad Hastings. Their playoff hopes will be decided at the Warrior Dome at 7:30 on Tuesday night against the Round Rock Dragons. This could be the biggest night in recent Westwood Basketball history, as only the winner will advance to the playoffs. It will also be Senior Night and time to honor the 9 seniors on this year's squad. The Warrior JV Team (21-4) will be playing for a district title at 6 p.m., so.......... COME EARLY, WEAR ORANGE, BE LOUD, GO WOOD! |

Holeman and Dettman
Combine to Keep Warrior Basketball Hopes Alive With Big Win
Over Georgetown The Warrior Boy's basketball team went into last nights District 16-5A contest with the Georgetown Eagles knowing that their season was on the brink and any chance of gaining their first playoff spot in 6 years required a victory against a team that had soundly thumped them earlier in district play. The Eagles also entered the contest knowing that a win was a must for them to hold on to a playoff spot, so the stage was set for a real battle. With both teams playing hard-nosed man to man defense, neither team could muster much offensive fire power in the first quarter as Georgetown broke out to a 12-6 lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, the ball came back over to J.T. Dettman's side of the court and he responded immediately with a three pointer from the wing and a driving left handed hook shot to get the Warriors within one. But a falling out of bounds 4-point play at the buzzer, by Georgetown's Michael Hardge (24 points), sent the Eagles into the locker room with a 24-19 edge at the half, with Hardge having 19 of their points. It was the lowest scoring half of the season for the Warriors, as they failed to take advantage of size mismatches and the Georgetown defense forced the Warriors into poor shot selections. In the second half, the Warriors came out strong early with Dettman and Matt Holeman leading the way on offense and Jake Pearcy putting the clamps on Hardge on defense. With three-pointers from Dettman and Holeman and driving baskets by Pearcy, Nalodka and Michael Harris, the Warriors solid team defense let them claim their first lead, 33-32, going into the final period. With both teams wearing down due to the defensive intensity of the game, forced shots and missed lay ups became the order of the day. With under a minute left to play, Jake Pearcy picked up his 5th foul with the Warriors trailing by 3 points. Nathan Robbins entered the game and promptly scored on a driving mid-range jumper to cut the lead to one with 20 seconds left. Then the Warrior defense was forced to foul Hardge, who made only one of two, giving the Warriors one last chance to tie the score and force overtime. But Matt Holeman had other plans and, with 2.6 seconds left, rebounded a long Derek Nalodka shot attempt and, while in mid-air, dropped the ball into the hoop and was fouled. The Georgetown coach called his final time-out to ice Mr. Holeman, but it was to no avail. Holeman drained his free throw and secured the win to keep the Warrior playoff hopes alive, 38-37. J.T. Dettman led the Warrior scoring with 13 points, followed by Matt Holeman with 6 points, as the Warriors improved to 4-6 in District play and still needing to win out against Leander and Round Rock to have a shot at a playoff spot. Next up in the Warrior's drive for the playoffs is an away game at Leander this Friday night. Please come out and show your support and cheer the team. These boys are underrated and underappreciated in the local basketball community, so everyone needs to come out and will them to the finish line. |

Westwood Boys Upset
Pflugerville The Westwood
Warrior Boys Basketball team had a very down and up week. On
Tuesday, the Warriors faced the Stony Point Tigers in what
was felt to be another must win game in order to advance to
the playoffs for the first time in 6 years. The Warriors
came out determined in the opening period and started out
with a brief lead, but the Tigers found enough range to take
a 12-11 lead after the first period. Then Jake Pearcy and
Derek Nalodka starting getting to the rim for some tough
scores and the Warriors were able to knot the low scoring
game at halftime, 25-25. The Warriors slowed the tempo still
further in the 3rd quarter and the game was knotted at 36-36
heading into the final period. In the 4th period, the
Warriors went to a zone defense, but it was Stony Point that
began to find the range from the outside and hit several
three point goals, while the Warriors failed to answer. With
Tiger shooters finding the open looks and the Warriors
having to hurry and play catch up, the Warriors were
outscored 23-9 in the final period in route to a
disappointing 59-45 loss. Jake Pearcy and Derek Nalodka led
the Warriors with 11 points each as the Warriors fell to 2-5
in district play.

Warrior Boys collect 2 district wins
After starting off the district campaign at 0-4, the
Warriors found themselves in a "must-win" situation
heading into the final two games of the first half of
district play and needing to start playing defense
again. They came out strong against the Leander Lions
and bolted out to a commanding first quarter lead on 3
long range three-point goals by J.T. Dettman, to take a
20-11 first quarter lead. The second quarter saw the
Warrior shooters go cold, but good team defense, outside
shooting from Nathan Robbins, and the rebounding of
Dettman and junior Parker Hanusa kept the Warriors in
the lead 35-27 at the half. In the second half, Warrior
free throw shooters took over with Derek Nalodka scoring
9 of his game high 15 points from the charity stripe.
For the game, the Warriors shot 22-29 from the line and
that proved to be the difference, as the Warriors
cruised to a 67-47 victory. Nathan Robbins contributed
14 big points to the cause, while Jake Pearcy had 13 and
J.T. Dettman finished with 11 points. |

Warriors Fall to Panthers The Westwood Warriors traveled to Pflugerville on
Tuesday night to face the always tough at home Panthers.
The game started out well for the Warriors with J.T.
Dettman and Derek Nalodka hitting early shots to spot
the Warriors an 11-4 lead. But Pflugerville called
timeout and changed their defense and the Warriors began
to force shots and turn the ball over against the
Panther zone. What shots the Warriors were able to
muster failed to find its mark pretty much the rest of
the way, while Panther shooters were either knocking
down three pointers over the Warrior zone defense or
getting free behind the Warrior full court press for
short lay ins. The 67-38 score was one of the most
lopsided losses of the year as the Warrior shooters
could not find their legs. Michael Harris was the only
Warrior scoring in double figures with 12 points, as the
team fell to 0-2 in district play. |

Warriors Come Back to Finish 2nd in Cedar Park Holiday
Tournament The Westwood Boys Basketball team took an 8-7 season record into the Cedar Park Holiday Basketball Tournament this past week and came away with a second place trophy. They faced Don Caldwell's McCallum Knights in their opener and once again got off to a slow star offensively. The Warriors press proved ineffective in the first half, as the Knights bolted out to a 10 point lead on numerous lay-ins. Michael Harris and J.T. Dettman kept the Warriors in the game in the first half with strong inside/out play, and Jake Pearcy did most of the Warrior scoring in the 3rd, but it was not until the 4th quarter that the Warrior press began to have an effect and the Knights began to tire. All District football linebacker, Ian Fry, made his defensive presence felt in the second half, pressuring the Knight ball handlers into turnovers and energizing the entire Warrior team in their comeback. With the scored tied at 67 all, Michael Harris scored on a drive to the basket in the final seconds to secure the Warrior victory. Playing his best all around game of the season, Harris rebounded and defended the paint and led all scorers with 18 points. J.T. Dettman followed with 16 points, while Jake Pearcy was right in there with 14 and Derek Nalodka had 11. Next up for the Warriors were the Belton Tigers and they wasted little time jumping up to a quick lead by forcing numerous Tiger turnovers and pounding the ball inside to Michael Harris in route to a 44-25 halftime lead. The Warriors controlled the tempo of the game with full court pressure and Junior Nathan Robbins, subbing in for an injured Matt Holeman, heated up with 11 third quarter points. The rest of the Warriors dominated the Tigers on their way to a convincing 84-53 win. Harris and Robbins led all scorers with 18 points each and were followed by J.T. Dettman with 13 points and Derek Nalodka with 11. The Warriors advanced to the Championship Pool to face the Allen Eagles of District 8-5A and got off to a fast start to take a 19-17 first quarter lead, despite numerous turnovers and shoddy ball handling. But things went downhill soon after that when the short handed Warriors began to fatigue from their own full court pressure and the Eagles began to sink numerous easy baskets as the Warriors gave up 30 points in the second quarter and trailed 47-30 at half time. Things did not get any better in the second half as the tired Warriors could not effectively run their full court press and Allen had their way. The Warriors limped to the finish line on the short end of an 84-58 score. Derek Nalodka led the scoring with 17 points, followed by Jake Pearcy with 13 and Nathan Robbins with 10. The final game of the tournament was a contest for 2nd Place and a rematch with Killeen Shoemaker, who had beaten the Warriors in their season opener. It proved to be just as exciting. This time Westwood jumped out on the Grey Wolves early, behind the inside play of Michael Harris and outside shooting of Derek Nalodka, and took a 17-9 lead after the first quarter in route to a 33-25 lead at the halftime break. With both teams feeling the fatigue of the Warrior press, Ian Fry and Josh Quintana came off the bench in the second half to provide an energy lift and keep the Warriors in front until the 4th Quarter. Much like the season opener, the Grey Wolves got it going inside in the final quarter, while the Warriors were beginning labor. With just under 3 minutes to go in the game, the Grey Wolves took their first lead and Jake Pearcy was whistled for his 5th foul. But J.T. Dettman and Ian Fry were not going to let the Warriors lose. Dettman hit a 3 pointer and a breakaway layup on a pass from Fry, to give the Warriors the lead at 56-53. Shoemaker answered with a trey of their own, but Dettman then found Fry on the wing, who hit a rainbow 3 pointer to give the Warriors a 59-56 lead. But the Grey Wolves were not through. A Warrior turnover and missed free throw allowed Shoemaker to convert and take back the lead 61-60, with 17 seconds left. A steal and drive to the basket by J.T. Dettman resulted in a foul and he rattled home both free throws to give the Warriors a 62-61 lead. Solid low post defense by Michael Harris caused the Shoemaker post to travel before getting off a shot and the Warriors came away with the revenge victory. It was a gut check game for a fatigued team, but the Warriors proved they have the will to win. Leading scorers for the Warriors were Jake Pearcy with 15 points, Michael Harris with 14, J.T. Dettman with 12 and Ian Fry and Derek Nalodka had 10 each. Stellar rebounding performances were turned in by Harris, Dettman and Ian Fry, while Jake Pearcy and Nathan Robbins played solid defense throughout the game. For the game, the Warriors made 21 out of 23 free throw attempts for a season best 91.3%. Michael Harris and Derek Nalodka were named to the All - Tournament Team. The Warriors improved their overall record to 11-8 and will travel to Pflugerville on Tuesday for their second district game. |

Warrior Boys Finish Second at Hill
Country Basketball Classic After finishing 7th at the South Padre Island Sweet 16 Tournament and losing to Liberty Hill, the Westwood Boy's Basketball Team turned things around dramatically in the Hill Country Classic at Lake Travis High School this past week. They put their Tuesday night loss to Liberty Hill behind them quickly in the first game, thrashing Lehman High School 89-78. Nathan Robbins led a balanced Warrior scoring attack with 16 points, followed by J.T. Dettman with 13, Michael Harris with 12, Jake Pearcy with 11, and Matt Holeman had 10. Against the Austin High Maroons, the Warriors continued their winning ways behind J.T. Dettman’s season high 28 points, including 6 three point baskets, in route to a 89-78 victory. The Warrior’s full court pressure forced numerous turnovers and the Maroons staged a valiant comeback in the 4th quarter before being silenced by the Warriors hitting 13 or 15 free throws down the stretch. Derek Nalodka added 13 points, while Matt Holeman and Jake Pearcy chipped in 12 each in the big victory. Next up was old rival Cedar Park, and once again the Warriors prevailed in a hotly contested battle, 60-42. Jake Pearcy heated up the cords from the outside with 20 points and was followed by Derek Nalodka with 14 as the Warriors managed the clock well down the stretch to secure their spot in the Championship Final. In the Championship Final, Jake Pearcy caught fire early from the 3-point line and scored 20 first half points as the Warriors battled the Brazosport Exporters to a 41-41 tie at halftime. The quicker and taller Exporters had their hands full until several Warrior starters got into foul trouble in the second half. A rare 7 point possession by the Exporters started a 14-0 run late in the game and the Warriors lost a tough fought battle, 97-78. Pearcy finished with a season high 25 points on 7 three point buckets and was followed by JT Dettman with 16 and Derek Nalodka with 14. Leading scorers for the tournament were Jake Pearcy, J.T. Dettman and Derek Nalodka. Jake Pearcy and Derek Nalodka were named to the All Tournament Team for the Warriors. |

Warriors Lose Tough One in Season
Opener 11/17/2011 The Warrior Boy's dropped a close battle with District 12-5A power Killeen Shoemaker, 82-79, at Killeen on Tuesday night. The playoff atmosphere in Grey Wolves Gym was a great experience for the Warriors and will serve them well as the season progresses. It was an back and forth battle with both teams taking 10 point leads at one time, but the final 4 minutes proved to be the difference in the final outcome. A tenacious full court pressure defense forced Shoemaker into numerous turnovers and the outside shooting of J.T. Dettman and breakaway layins by Jake Pearcy kept the Warriors in the lead until the final minute of the game. Dettman lead the Warriors with 27 points, 13 rebounds, while Pearcy added 16 points and played a solid defensive game. Derek Nalodka chipped in 12 points and played a solid floor game against a full court pressure defense. Home opener is Friday night against the Temple Wildcats, at 7:30 in the Warrior Dome.
