The Westwood Warriors came up short for the second week in a row in district play against the Pflugerville Panthers by a score of 12-28. The offense struggled to find it’s rhythm throughout the night. The Warrior Offense did manage two scores on the night on the ground behind some good blocking by the offensive line. Running Back Senan Jaber got the scoring started with a 50 yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Quarterback Mike McCaughey scored on a 10 yard run later on in the same quarter. Too many turnovers and bad snaps stonewalled any momentum the Warriors had throughout the night. Running Back Jaasiel Quiroz also had several big plays with his hard running throughout the night. The Warrior Defense forced the Panther Offense to drive the field all night, yielding only one big offensive play. After making several adjustments to the Panther attack, the Defense was able to force them to drive the field on every drive. Christian Benford and Trent Maindelle performed well on the Defensive Line while Walter Nunez (Linebacker) and Alex Degterev (Safety) contributed well at their respective positions. Tackling and desire to finish plays is what the Warrior Defense will need to focus on during the bi-week to prepare for the McNeil Mavericks in week 7.

The Westwood Warriors traveled to Pflugerville to take on the Pflugerville Panthers at Kuempel Stadium on Wednesday and lost a tough one 36-12. The Westwood defense started slow allowing a touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. The offense responded and moved the ball early with ease picking up a couple crucial first downs. The Warriors offensive attack was led by quarterback Ricky Brown who connected with wide receiver George Zeron for a 35 yard catch and wide receiver Joe Kelly for a 22 yard pick up. The Warriors defense recovered and were able to slow the high-power Panther rushing attack for a brief time but several big runs by the Panthers were too much for the defense. Westwood scored before the half as the offense marched the length of the field. During the final drive of the half, Kelly caught a screen pass and raced 40 yards before being tackled. Two plays later Brown found Zeron in the end zone for a touchdown as time expired. The second half wide receiver Kevin Kane came up with a couple of big catches. Westwood’s final touchdown came late in the fourth quarter as running back Frederick Coleman plunged through the line into the end zone from 4 yards out. Leading the way for Coleman’s running and keeping the defensive line off the quarterback were offensive linemen Brandon Clark, Ryan Harrington, Garrett Keefer, Riley Brown, Saif Dhuka, and Derek Dobie. Defensive highlights included a fumble caused by cornerback Nathaniel Maekawa which was recovered by safety Taylor Griffin. Safeties Manish Pathi, Justin Lass, and Taylor Griffin along with cornerback Ray Lu each recorded a tackle for loss. The Warriors will play the McNeil Mavericks Thursday, October 13, at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex at 5:30. Please come out and support the Warriors!

Freshman Orange - 22 Pflugerville - 52

The Westwood Warriors Freshman Orange team lost to Pflugerville on Thursday evening by a score of 52-22. Pflugerville struck first taking a 8 point lead against the Warriors, but the Warriors quickly answered tying the game at 8. Pflugerville again jumped ahead of the Warriors with two unanswered scores; however, after a 4 down stop the Warriors put together a 28 second scoring drive which narrowed the Warrior to 6 points going into halftime. In the second half the panthers proved too much for the warriors as they extended their lead by multiple scores. On the offensive side of the ball the warriors were led by the quarterback Travis Wilde, receiver Nick Andress, and running back Eric Tran.

Freshman White - 13 Pflugerville - 42

The Warriors met a touch opponent Wednesday night in the Pflugerville Panthers. The team played hard and battle all four quarters, just falling a little short of a victory. The defense flew to the ball but missed tackles gave the Panthers the opportunities they needed to put the ball in the end zone. Quarterback Sam LaBelle led the offense in attempting a comeback throwing for over 100 yards and two TD’s, just a little too late though. Nick Weir came up with some big short yardage catches from LaBelle that kept the drives going. WR Colton Kirby had a breakout night hauling in 6 catches from LaBelle, and was on the receiving end of the two TD passes. The Warriors continue to play hard and compete and are ready to continue their success in two against McNeil.
