Westwood gets season opening victory behind Luke Andrews 3-hit shut-out!  With no score going into the bottom of the third, the Warriors drew first blood.  Jake Irby walked, and Ben Johnson hit a towering home run to left center to put two on the board.  In the fourth inning the home team blew the game open with 5 runs.  Irby walked again, and moved to third on a nice bunt down the first base line by Matt Frerichs.  Frerichs was safe at first when the first baseman dropped the ball on the tag.  Brooks Eady singled to drive in Irby, and Jake O'Neal followed with a single to score Frerichs.  After a walk to Will Johnson, Ben Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk, and one out later, Tyler Lunceford also walked to force in a run.  Craig McConaughy got a sac fly to complete the inning's scoring.  In the 5th inning, Frerichs walked, and Brooks Eady hit a home run.  Next batter O'Neal singled, and Will Johnson followed with a two-run home run to end the game.

In the late game, Westwood battled a very good Tomball team to come away with a 12-9 win!  Blake Balazs started for the Warriors, and although he gave up three in the first, he settled down and shut-out the Cougars for the next 4 innings, ending up with 7 K's in 5 innings.  Meanwhile, in the bottom of the second for Westwood, Tyler Lunceford doubled.
Craig McConaughy followed with a hit to drive in Lunceford, and Johnny Anderson scorched a line drive that hit the sign beyond the fence in left center.  In the third inning Will Johnson hit a home run to put the Warriors ahead 4-3.  In the sixth inning Tomball scored 5 on Westwood's bullpen to take a seemingly commanding 8-4 lead.  But in the bottom half, Westwood came back with 5 of their own to take the lead again.  The big blow was a 2-run dinger from Ben Johnson.  In the top of the seventh Tomball scored to tie the game, setting the stage for a fantastic finish.  In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs, Adam Harmon drew a walk.  Matt Frerichs pinch ran, and stole second.  Brooks Eady also walked, and then Jake O'Neal finished it with a 3-run walk-off homer for a 12-9 win.  This one's gonna be hard to top!

Stanford Martinez pitched a strong game, allowing only one first inning run, but Westwood couldn't get much offense going in the blustery north wind and ended up with a 9-inning 1-1 tie.  The Warriors only run scored in the third when Luke Andrews led off with a single, Johnny Anderson laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move him over, and he scored on a hit by Will Johnson.  In the fourth Ryan Atwood doubled, but no timely hits followed to bring him home.

In the late game Friday night, the Warriors played a solid, error-free game to defeat a good Highland Park team.  Westwood got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Craig McConaughy and Ryan Atwood singled, and then Johnny Anderson's hit plated one run.  After a walk to Jake Irby, Brooks Eady had a sac fly to get Atwood home.  In the bottom of the third, Will Johnson walked, Ben Johnson reached base on an error by the center fielder, and McConaughy loaded the bases with an infield single.  Luke Andrews followed with a run-scoring single to boost the lead to 3-0.  Eady was on the mound and although he allowed a run to score in the 4th, he pitched well enough through 5 innings to get the win.  Urbane Martinez pitched the 6th and 7th without allowing a run to pick up a save.

On Saturday, playing the first game of the morning after a double-header the night before, the Warriors did not play well.  They gave up a two-run home-run in the top of the first, and just couldn't stop Coronado.  At the plate, Westwood managed only a single hit.  Their only run scored on an RBI ground-out by Matt Frerichs.  Fortunately, there aren't many morning games on the schedule.

The afternoon game, against Fort Bend Travis was better, but Westwood ended up on the short end of a 7-6 score.  The Warriors got two in the first when Brooks Eady led off with a walk, and Jake O'Neal followed with a single.  Another single from Will Johnson scored Eady, leaving runners at first and third.  O'Neal then scored on the ol' delayed double-steal play.  The Tigers scored 2 in the 2nd and 4 in the 4th to take a 6-2 lead.  Westwood got one back in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI double by Aaron Moore.  Travis stretched their lead to 7-3 in the top half of the 5th.  In the home half, Eady reached base on an error, and O'Neal was hit by a pitch to put two on.  Will Johnson dropped a flare into left field to load the bases.  Then with one out, Craig McConaughy doubled to clear the bases and get the Warriors within one.  Unfortunately the rally died there, and time expired, ending the tournament with a second loss.

In the Warriors first road game of the year, playing Hendrickson at Round Rock HS, a good pitching matchup turned into a third straight loss when the Hawks got four runs in the 4th.  That was all they would need on a day when the Warriors couldn't string together enough hits to score on the Hendrickson starter, in spite of doubles from Brooks Eady in the third and Michael Schaefer in the fifth.  Westwood got a rally going in the 7th when Craig McConaughy led off with a single, and Luke Andrews beat out an infield hit.  After a strikeout, Tyler Lunceford singled to load the bases.  One run scored on a wild pitch, and then Adam Harmon drew a walk to load the bases again.  Eady drove in a second run with a groundout, but the game ended there at 5-2.

The second game of the double-header went to Westwood 5-4 in a close, well-played contest.  The Warriors jumped ahead in the first inning when Will Johnson was hit by a pitch and then scored on a double by Ben Johnson.  Meanwhile, Brooks Eady kept the Westlake hitters off-balance, holding them to one run on one hit over the first 5 innings.  In the top of the 6th, Luke Andrews reached base when the shortstop mishandled a hard-hit grounder.  Ben Johnson singled, Andrews ended up scoring on a wild pitch, and then Aaron Moore singled to drive in Johnson.  Westlake got a 2-run pinch-hit HR in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning.  In the top of the 8th, after a walk and a HBP put two runners on, Adam Harmon hit a ball off the base of the right field wall to score one, and Michael Schaefer had a sac fly to make it a two run lead.  Westlake got a lead-off triple in the bottom of the eighth, but only scored that one run.

It wasn't the toughest pitching the Warriors have seen, but you'd have to say they made the most of their opportunities on offense Saturday.  Ben Johnson led the way with a two-run homer in the first inning, and added a single, double, and triple to hit for the cycle!  Westwood scored 9 runs in the 2nd inning with 12 batters reaching base.  Nine different Warriors contributed hits.  Brooks Eady had 2 doubles and 4 RBI.  And it was a good thing that Westwood was hitting well, because Midland Christian's hitters were swinging well too.  Ethan Garland pitched 5 solid innings in relief to pick up the win.

The Friday noon game brought a team boasting a #1 state ranking to Warrior Field.  Their starter is a Rice signee and the stands were full of scouts.  Luke Andrews started and pitched very well as Westwood hung close to them for 4 innings.  The Warrior defense was not as solid as usual, and the mistakes finally led to a big inning for Heritage in the 5th.  Craig McConaughy scored the only run for the home team on a passed ball, after a sun-aided triple (it sure was a bright sunny day).

The Friday night game was Warriors vs Warriors as Arlington Martin came in with another highly ranked team.  Westwood jumped on their starter right from the beginning.  For the second night in a row, Brooks Eady led off the game with a home run.  Jake O'Neal got a single, and Will Johnson reached base on an error by the pitcher.  Ben Johnson hit a long sac fly to right field to score O'Neal.  Craig McConaughy singled, and Aaron Moore worked a walk.  Ryan Atwood then doubled to score two.  Luke Andrews followed with an RBI single to put the Warriors up 5-0.  In the second, O'Neal and Ben Johnson got hits, and McConaughy walked to load the bases.  Moore came through with a single to score one, and Johnson scored on a sac fly from Atwood make the score 7-1 in favor of Westwood.  As the game wore on, Martin found a pitcher that stemmed the flood of Westwood hits and the Arlington boys got their offense going.  The hit some long balls and scored 5 in the 4th, two in the 5th to tie it and 1 in the sixth that turned out to be the game winner for them.

It was the Warriors vs. Westlake round 2 at the Dell Diamond on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  Through 4 innings, Westlake built a 7-1 lead and seemed in control.  Westwood's only run to that point scored in the second on two errors in the Westlake infield.  The momentum shifted in the bottom of the fifth when the Warriors broke through against the Chaps starter.  Luke Andrews was hit by a pitch, and then Will Johnson drew a walk.  Ben Johnson followed with a single to load the bases.  Craig McConaughy was hit by a pitch to force in a run.  Then Urbane Martinez delivered a pinch-hit double to right field to drive in two more.  Jake O'Neal followed with a double to the power alley in left to score two more.  O'Neal then scored on a perfect squeeze bunt by Johnny Anderson to tie the score.  Unfortunately Westwood couldn't come up with another key hit to take the lead, and time expired before another inning could be started. The game ended in a 7-7 tie, but it was a very upbeat ending for the Warriors.

In the bottom of the 7th, Hayden Simerly hit a solo home run for the Tigers, but that was the only run they got.  Eady pitched the complete game and struck out eight.

It was a tough Tuesday evening for the Warriors as an 8-3 lead turned into an 11-8 loss to the Rangers from Vista Ridge.  The Rangers scored first, but Westwood tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the first on hits by Jake O'Neal and Luke Andrews and an RBI groundout from Will Johnson.  The Warriors big inning was the 4th.  Down 3-2, Brooks Eady singled to get things going.  Jake Irby drew a walk, and a wild pitch advanced the runners.  Andrews put down a nice squeeze bunt to score the tying run.  Then with two outs, the Johnson brothers walked to load the bases, and Tyler Lunceford doubled to left-center to score three.  Craig McConaughy then hit a long fly to left center that the left fielder missed and when the third baseman missed the relay throw, McConaughy ended up safe at third.  He scored when Michael Schaefer's grounder was misplayed by the second baseman.  That put things at 8-3 Westwood, but Vista Ridge never gave up and tied the game at 8 in the 6th.  Then in the top of the 8th the Rangers got three more for the win.  Westwood changed pitchers 5 times, but couldn't find a "hot hand" to shut them down.  Thus ends the first half of district play with Westwood in third place sporting a 4-3 record.  Go Warriors!!

The Warriors ended a very long week losing to Lake Travis 10-1 Saturday.  The Westwood offense remained in hiding, with just one run scored in the 4th when Ben Johnson doubled and Jake O'Neal singled him in.  Matt Litz and Grant Dixon got their first varsity playing time, with Litz collecting a single up the middle in the bottom of the 6th, and both making some solid plays in the infield as well as pitching.

It's been feast or famine lately, and thank goodness it was our turn to feast tonight, 12-2 in 5 innings at Leander.  The Warriors had much more success against Michael Reed the second time around, beginning with Will Johnson's two-run homer way over the right field fence in the first inning.  In the third inning with Craig McConaughy on first, Luke Andrews laced a hit and run single through the right side to put runners at the corners.  Will Johnson got another RBI with a fly to center.  Then Ben Johnson lined one over the fence in right center for two more runs.  In the fourth, a single by Tyler Lunceford, and walks to Michael Schaefer and Stanford Martinez loaded the bases with one out.  Craig McConaughy singled to score one run, and Leander went to the bullpen.  Two more walks ensued and another change of pitchers.  The 4th run of the inning scored on Ben Johnson's sac fly.  Three more runs in the top of the fifth completed the scoring.  Lunceford led off with a walk, stole second and then Brooks Eady reached on an error by the shortstop that left runners at the corners.  Lunceford scored on a double steal when the throw to home was wide, and Eady ended up on third.  Stanford Martinez lined one through the right side of a drawn in infield to score Eady and when the right fielder let the ball get by him, Martinez ended up on third with a triple.  Martinez scored on a grounder to short.  Meanwhile Luke Andrews pitched well ... a complete game with 7 K's.  Leander's only runs came on Peter Cuomo's 2-run homer in the 3rd.

Westwood beats Georgetown 3-2 to run their district record to 6-5.  A well played game, exciting down to the last out.  Brooks Eady pitched the complete game with 8 K's for the win.  Georgetown scored first with a run in the 4th, and added one in the 5th for a 2-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Warriors struck back to tie the game.  Will Johnson drew a lead-off walk, and Ben Johnson beat out an infield hit to put two on.  Then with two-outs, Michael Schaefer singled up the middle to score both.  Schaefer took second on the throw.  Johnny Anderson came in as the courtesy runner for Schaefer.  Eady followed with a single to right field, but the right fielder made an accurate throw to the plate for the third out.  In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Atwood led off with a double.  Craig McConaughy was up next and bunted towards third moving the runner over.  McConaughy beat the throw to first, and as the Georgetown second baseman walked away from first with the ball, McConaughy took off for second.  As the surprised Eagle second baseman turned to chase, Atwood sprinted home from third.  By the time the defense realized he was running it was too late to make the throw to home, and in the ensuing confusion, McConaughy was safe at second.  In the top of the seventh, Georgetown got a leadoff double, but Eady got a strikeout, pop-up to first, and another strikeout to strand the runner on third.  What a game!

Westwood closed out a perfect week with a 6-5 win over Belton.  The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd, with Jake O'Neal's single to lead off.  Ryan Atwood then was hit by a pitch to get to first.  Then O'Neal stole third and scored when the catcher's throw went into left field.  Stanford Martinez singled to drive in Atwood and then Matt Frerichs got a hit to bring Martinez home with a third run.  In the 3rd inning, Westwood took the lead for good.  Brooks Eady led off with a double and Tyler Lunceford got a hit to put runners at the corners.  Will Johnson ran for Lunceford, and an errant pick-off throw from the pitcher allowed Eady to score and Johnson to go to third.  Atwood drew a walk, and then started a double-steal with Johnson beating the throw home.  Atwood then scored on a single from Matt Litz.  Urbane Martinez came on to pitch the 4th to the 6th allowing no runs.  Atwood made a nice diving catch of a sinking liner in center field in the fifth to help keep Belton from getting a rally going.  In the top of the seventh, Belton got within 6-5, and had a runner on second before Blake Balazs struck out a pinch hitter to end the game.

Westwood couldn't keep the win streak going at McNeil Tuesday night.  Ian Jones pitched a complete game 1-hitter for a 7-2 Mavs win.  Michael Schaefer had the clutch hit for Westwood for the second game in a row, driving in Will Johnson and Jake O'Neal with a single up the middle in the 4th.  Unfortunately that was about all the offense the Warriors could muster tonight.  McNeil hit the ball well.  Jordan Geissinger got a home run, Tommy Baker had two doubles and David Rodriguez had a double and a 3-run triple.

Westwood lost a key district matchup Friday night against Cedar Park 4-0.  Brooks Eady pitched for the Warriors and good pitching and defense kept the score knotted at zero through four.  In the top of the 2nd inning, the lead-off man put a drag bunt down the 3rd base line, and Matt Litz made a very nice play to get him at first.  In the top of the 4th, the T-wolves Nathan Thornhill led off with a double.  The next batter hit a bounding ball at shortstop, and Craig McConaughy made a quick throw to third to get the lead runner.  But with two-out and nobody on in the top of the 5th, Cedar Park broke through for 4 runs on a walk, catcher's interference, 2 more walks, and an error in the outfield that allowed 3 to score.  In the bottom of the 6th, Will Johnson doubled with one out, and Ben Johnson was intentionally walked, but a hard grounder right at the second baseman ended it in a double play.  That was Westwood's last real threat to score.

Westwood played at Connally Saturday, and ended the week with another loss 7-6.  The Warriors struck first in the 2nd inning.  Jake O'Neal was hit by a pitch, and Michael Schaefer drew a walk.  Both runners stole, and then O'Neal scored on a passed ball.  Ryan Atwood singled to drive in the second run.  In the 3rd, Ben Johnson and O'Neal both walked.  Schaefer singled to bring Johnson in, and then Atwood singled to drive in the second run for a 4-0 Warrior lead.  Connally got 2 in the third, but in the Westwood 4th, Craig McConaughy reached on a drag bunt to third, Brooks Eady sacrificed him to second, and Will Johnson tripled to the gap in right center for a 5-2 lead.   In the 5th, Schaefer reached on an error, and eventually courtesy runner Brian Jones scored on a sac fly from Johnny Anderson.  Connally tied in at 6 in the bottom of the 5th.  Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars got a lead-off double.  McConaughy came on to pitch, and got the first out on an infield fly, but when the ball was lost in the sun, the runner was able to advance to third.  He scored the game winner on a squeeze bunt.

A season ending 9-6 loss to Vista Ridge was hard to take.  Both of VR's district wins came against Westwood.  Sometimes baseball isn't very logical.  The Warriors started off well, getting the bases loaded on walks and then Ryan Atwood came through with a line drive over the centerfielder's head to clear the bases.  Westwood kept the score close early in the game with some good defensive plays.  In the bottom of the third Vista Ridge got a double with two runners on base, and Matt Frerichs throw from the fence, relayed by Craig McConaughy cut down the 2nd runner at the plate to keep the game tied.  Down 7-3 in the fifth, Westwood got a couple runners on, and McConaughy launched one over the left field fence to get the Warriors within one.  In the 6th inning, Will Johnson worked a walk, and Ben Johnson followed with a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  Two outs later, Tyler Lunceford hit a line drive to left, but the leftfielder made a nice diving catch to stop the Warriors last scoring threat.
